What exactly is same-sex attraction?

Whether you've noticed your same-sex attraction earlier, or maybe a little later in life - not to worry! This is absolutely normal, and really not that uncommon!

What is same-sex attraction?

Some guys, whether it be earlier in life or a little later, come to the realisation that they are attracted to other guys. This is perfectly normal and not uncommon!

Studies have shown that roughly 10% of the population experiences same-sex attraction, although some suggest that this could in fact be higher - so you’re not alone!

Why do some guys realise later than others?

There’s a few factors as to why this is.

Due to societal pressures and an expectation to be ‘straight’ - many guys repress their same-sex attraction to fit the ‘norm’ and don’t acknowledge this attraction until a little later in life. These societal pressures can affect any guy, whether they acknowledge their same-sex attraction in their teens or in their late 60s.

Many theories suggest that sexuality can also be fluid, which could explain why some guys feel like they developed a same-sex attraction later in life.

Why are some guys same-sex attracted?

To be honest, we’re not exactly sure. There’s a number of theories circulating as to why, but science suggests that sexuality is determined not by upbringing or environmental factors as it was once previously thought, but rather determined during our development in the womb due to a number of hormonal and genetic factors.

Theories also suggest that sexuality can be fluid and ‘on a spectrum’ where very few people are absolutely ‘straight’ or absolutely ‘gay’ but rather somewhere in between.

What does this mean for me?

It can mean as much, or as little as you want. Many guys feel that if they come out as ‘gay’ or ‘bi’ they need to fit a certain lifestyle.

The reality is that you can identify however you like, because your sexuality is only a small part of what makes you, you! Many guys find words like ‘gay’ or bi’ not quite right for them, so you don’teven have to use them if you’d prefer.

Just remember that there are a lot of guys out there experiencing the same thing and you don’t have to do it alone.
